Three links – August 18

The Difference Between Infographics And Their Simpler Cousins

I like this article mainly because I have been talking about the difference between ‘infographics’ and ‘posters’ (in the academic sense I am familiar with) since I started at the day job. I agree with the author that arguing over the definitions is pointless (and frustrating) but getting the language right is also important.

How Medium is building a new kind of company with no managers

I’ve been doing a little bit of experimenting over at Medium – writing stuff that is more personal than usual but to be honest I am not sure what it offers from a publishing point of view. However this article about how they are embracing Holacracy – an organisation structure without managers that favours a personal touch rather than traditional methods – is genuinely interesting. Despite the fact my career is tied to my pursuit of management roles it isn’t something I am that comfortable with and this is really interesting.

Meet the Hackers Who Want to Jailbreak the Internet

I think the whole IndieWebCamp thing is interesting and the POSSE idea (Publish (on your) Own Site, Syndicate Elsewhere) is appealing – though I am breaking that concept at the moment with the Medium stuff I’m doing. There is a UK event in Brighton after DConstruct in a couple of weeks and I might see if I can stay over an extra night and check it out.
