I use this [update 2025]

Mr Briggs shared his new Macbook Air setup – with his gazillion apps(!) – so I thought I’d so a quick update on my setup (mainly as my desk is reasonably tidy since I had to move it a little!).

Hardware

Absolute bog standard Mac Mini M1 from 2021.
HP 27″ (V27ie G5) display from 2024 – bit of a mistake honestly. I should have paid a bit more for something better.
iPad Air (2020) – I use Sidecar so I can occasionally have a second monitor but mainly this is an entertainment device when I’m travelling (and my DC and Marvel subscriptions!)
Macbook Air (M1) from 2022. For anytime I am anywhere other than my desk and particularly on the road or in an office.
iPhone 15 – gave in to my ageing eyes and got a larger iPhone after years of SE and Minis.
Logitech M720 mouse.
Blue Yeti Nano for my microphone.
Logitech C920 HD webcam (needs an upgrade – any ideas?).
Wonderbooms(!) speaker – no memory of buying this but the sound is really good compared to the MacMini speakers.
AirPod Pros and Beats by Dre Studio Pros because I fear silence (I also carry a set of wired headphones if I’m out).

Stationery

Sharpie S-Gel pens
A6 index cards/Classic Post-Its – I write my day plan on these and when I am on calls I write ‘notes’ / nonsense on them. It is a mess. At the end of each week I cull the real crazy stuff and then take photos of the rest and stick in a folder in Drive. They basically just act as reminders for the weeknote I write for myself.
Moleskine cahier notebooks in a leather journal cover – goes everywhere with me and continues all manner of random ideas and reminders.

Software

Basically the antithesis of Dave. Nothing interesting.

I use Google for almost everything – Gmail, Meet, Drive, Docs, Slides, Sheets, Photos, Forms. Though for clients it remains Teams/Outlook land.

Slack of course (though less and less).

I do use iA Writer and iA Presenter increasingly but most of my talks are still created in Keynote.

I use Canva for any and all image stuff (which is mainly designing stickers!).

I literally just use Notion as a link dump with the ‘Save to Notion’ extension in Chrome.

WordPress for this blog and Ghost for the newsletter (I think this is the last year of WP though – going to shift fully to Ghost in 2026.)

I have accounts with OpenAI and Claude which I use sparingly but I do use.

Still use Feedly Pro for RSS and Spotify for music/audiobooks/podcasts (though I listen to very few of the latter).

Oh and that is me as Chopper from Judge Dredd by 2000AD artist Boo Cook, ‘Love & Peace’ by AcerOne, Hope by Ben Eine, Batman badge from Golden Apple Comics in Oakland (Robin is elsewhere) and King Kirby (my lucky pin for when I give talks!).

  1. For a new webcam I would recommend the Insta360 Link 2 or Link 2C. They are the same camera, the only difference is whether you get a mechanical gimbal. Great image quality, good add-on software. https://www.insta360.com/product/insta360-link2

And don’t forget lighting, if you need it. The camera has good low-light performance, but good lighting makes a real difference, especially if you are hosting classes or mentoring folks, etc. (Leaders should look more put-together than followers.) You can get key lights just about anywhere, but if you want something a step up from cheap Chinese stuff, check out what Elgato offers. They have the Key Light Neo for $90 and their professional Key Light MK.2 for $180. https://www.elgato.com/us/en/p/key-light-neo

  2. That insta360 is exactly the one I’ve been looking at ~ I’ve had my eye on it since Wirecutter recommended it.

As for the lighting – I do have a decent LED desklight.
